INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Playa Del Racing made huge steps forward narrowing the gap between the Panoz chassis and the Dallara chassis on the second day of qualifying for the 2007 Indianapolis 500.
Jaques Lazier broke the 220mph barrier late in the afternoon on the final day of first weekend qualifying, but the breakthrough wasn’t enough to put the No.21 Indiana Ice/Venture Logistics car into the field for the 91st running of the Indianapolis 500.
“We made some huge steps forward today,” said Jaques Lazier. “I’m so proud of the Playa Del Racing guys. We have worked really hard as a team to catch up with those who have more resources and have run races earlier in the year.”
Jaques’ older brother, and former Indianapolis 500 Champion, Buddy Lazier made his qualifying attempt immediately before Jaques. Buddy managed to bump his way into the final spot available in the second day of qualifying.
Bob Lazier, father of Jaques and Buddy, stood at the end of pit lane to watch both attempts.
“I wish they both could have made it,” said Bob Lazier, who ran the Indianapolis 500 in 1981. “Everyone kept asking me who I was cheering for, but I love them both the same. They both drive for great teams, and I think they are both going to do great in the race.”
The exciting last minute bumping scenario did not work to the benefit of Playa Del Racing, but the team managed to clear some hurdles throughout the day during practice.
“We have had a lot of trouble finding the speed this month, but now we know we have it. Phil (Giebler) and I are going to be able to go out there on Wednesday as teammates, and really show what this team is capable of. Having the opportunity to run these last few days is going to give us an advantage going into next weekend. I can’t thank the team, the Indiana Ice, and Venture Logistics for all their hard work and support in giving me the chance to get out there this weekend,” said Jaques.
Playa Del Racing will be back on track this Wednesday to begin preparations for qualifying on Saturday.
