Race Recap: Iowa

Playa Del Racing and Al Unser III proved once again the team will not be overcome by adversity.

After struggling to find speed throughout the weekend during practices and qualifications the team broke through in brilliant fashion by climbing from Unser’s starting spot of 19th in the field of 22 cars to another solid 7th place finish.

“I couldn’t be more proud of these guys,” said Unser. “This weekend wasn’t looking good for us going into the race, but everyone did their part to give me a great race car.”

Playa Del Racing has proven once again that the little one car team can pack a major punch when it comes to  racing. Jaques Lazier started on the inside of row number ten at this year’s Indianapolis 500, and managed to lead the race before a late race incident took the Playa Del Racing team out of contention.

“This team never fails to fight its way out of a corner,” said co-owner of PDR, Gary Sallee. “The guys working on our cars always find a way to not only salvage a weekend, but they find a way to go above and beyond expectations.”

Al Unser III proved that the new Iowa Speedway is capable of providing spectacular side-by-side racing. Unser moved through the field with a combination of fury and finesse. Making several three wide passes, and using parts of the track that no one else dared venture into.

“The car was just perfect. I wish we would have had more laps to go up there and challenge the leaders, but we really just ran out laps,” said Unser, who has finished in the top 10 in all three races he has run for PDR this season. “To say I had fun out there would be an understatement.”

Playa Del Racing will have a weekend off this weekend with the IndyCar Series goes to Richmond. Phil Giebler will return in two weeks to take on the road course in Watkin’s Glen, NY.

“This is an exciting time for everyone at Playa Del Racing,” said Susan Schafer, co-owner of PDR. “We have reached a point where we feel like we can run with anyone out there. This team features some of the best mechanics, engineers, and drivers in this business and they prove it each and every weekend we are on the track.”
